It is known for its well-preserved ruins of an ancient Mayan port. The main building is a large stone structure called El Castillo, perched on top of a rocky cliff, above the white sand beaches and turquoise sea. Near the ruins, you will find the Tulum National Park, a coastal area with mangroves and cenotes. Tulum has two basic areas: Tulum Pueblo and Tulum Playa. The town is inland, about 5 km from the beach. It has a main avenue, a lot of bustle and cheaper accommodations. It is not particularly picturesque. To see beauty the option is Tulum beach, with the best hotels, shops and restaurants. Near Tulum there are wonderful destinations such as Bacalar Lagoon, Punta laguna, Maya Kaan, etc.
